Gordon K. Uyehara

Residing at the foot hills of the lush Moanalua Garden countryside, Gordon sequesters himself in his home and creates fanciful silver metal clay pieces. The wonderful flora and multitudes of fauna inspire his artwork daily after he awakes from his nap. He sighs in contentment blissfully unaware of the current economic gloom reported on the corporate news stations.

Growing up in Kailua, Oahu, I am constantly surrounded by inspiration: the beaches, the mountains, the lifestyle, and the people. Coming from a family of artists, I’ve been blessed with the passion for art and design. I was "properly" introduced to jewelry design in 2002 at Bead It!, and since then, with the love and support of family and friends, I am able to express myself through my jewelry.

I've just discovered the beach on Waikiki! I take the bus to work and get off about 4 bus stops earlier so I can walk on the sand to get to work...it's one of the best things I've discovered for myself! Along this walk, I am able to listen to the sounds of the waves and feel the sea breeze. To top it all, I sometimes find beach glass washed ashore and, you guessed it, I incorporate it into jewelry pieces!

i enjoy turning the ordinary into extraordinary, hunting thru thrift stores looking for a vintage center piece or unusual charm or trinkit is my new addiction. I find myself moving back into dainty delicate dangles getting new inspiration from indian jewelry, and lots of woven styles!

Making jewelry is Kathy's passion and her second career. She loves all manner of making jewelry, although foremost among them is metal working. Kathy teaches because she loves to see her students express their excitement at learning something new and becoming inspired to make beautiful jewelry with their newfound skills.

Teaching classes at Bead It! is thoroughly enjoyable because I am able to share what I have learned and help people to express their innate creativity.
Learning to create art and beauty makes people happy!

Hmmm...What to say, it's always hard to explain yourself to others but I'll give it a try. Jewelry is a fairly new love in my life. I find it is a wonderful way to share your art and creativity. I adore literally covering people in a sparkly expression of emotion. The opportunity to teach has been so rewarding. I learn something new every class. I can only hope that my students take away half as much from our shared experience as I do.

I am inspired to teach classes because of the students. I love to see the reaction on the student's face when they are finished with the project. Making jewelry is my creative outlet and I enjoy wearing my creations!

Metal is my love and now I have taken it to another level, for me. Soldering has been the new joy in my life and I want to share it with everyone. It's not only simple, but extremely fun and the pieces you can create are almost limitless! Incorporating that technique into other beading areas will be a great and fun challenge for me in the coming months. I look forward to sharing my mind!

My inspiration all begins with the attraction of a single sparkling bead. With so many possibilities, every stitch, twist or turn expresses who you are till the very finish. I aquire instant gratification while I share my passion amoung others of the same interest.

I'm thrilled to be back as a teacher this semester and happy that I can bring a new herringbone pattern to the class. In addition to writing the monthly newsletter for the Bead Society of Hawaii, Oahu chapter, I lead an annual beaded holiday ornament workshop. Other teaching experience includes two years working with adolescents and teaching life skills in the Peace Corps. Professionally, I have a background with non-profits, and most recently worked over eight years within the tech industry as a technical writer.

I've been beading for over 12 years, and have specialized in peyote stitch, including amulet bags. I also try projects from beading magazines, books, and occasional classes, including the BeadAway 2008 retreat in Waikiki.
